Entrepreneurship is the cornerstone of sustainable growth within a community and the best way to minimize the impact of ripples caused by economic fluctuations.  Innovation is the driving force of the entrepreneur and the Taylor University Business Plan Competition.  It is designed to encourage, identify, and assist local entrepreneurs with the most innovative and commercially viable concepts.

The purposes of the Business Plan Competition are:

  • Encourage area entrepreneurs through cash prizes, planning support, and networking opportunities
  • Increase the awareness level of area investors about community-based innovators
  • Identify local entrepreneurs that might benefit from business incubation services
  • Help local businesses grow thereby impacting the local community job availability and tax base

The 2006 competition finals were successfully held May 11th in the Whitaker Auditorium on the Taylor University Upland campus.  The three top finishers (left to right) from the competition were:

  • 1st Place -- Smitty's Truck Wash, Inc. (J. Mike Smithson), $8,000
  • 2nd Place -- Tiergan Technologies, LLC (Troy Tomasik), $3,000
  • 3rd Place -- Higher Sites Productions, Inc., (Helen Kibby and Elizabeth Thompson), $1,000
  • Best Undergraduate Award -- Tiergan Technologies, LLC $1,000

Two other teams rounded out the group of 2006 Finalists:

  • JLS Enterprises (Jordan Solem)
  • StratoStar Systems, LLC (Jason Krueger)

Thanks to everyone that participated in the competition, particularly the judges, competitors. support personnel, and the sponsors.  All of us look forward with great anticipation to the 2007 Business Plan Competition.  Check back in the fall for instructions and timeline.
